Chapter Information

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is the only UC campus primarily devoted to research and education in health science fields. At UCSF there is a convergence of health professions in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and graduate study. Unlike most schools, we do not have any undergraduate students. This provides a unique yet challenging environment for this AAPS student chapter. Although in the past our chapter has focused its efforts exclusively on graduate students in the pharmaceutical sciences, we are currently expanding and recruiting students enrolled in other related graduate programs and the School of Pharmacy. Current members of the AAPS Student Chapter at UCSF include graduate students in the programs of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics (PSPG), Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Bioengineering, as well as professional students in the School of Pharmacy.

Planned Activities and Events

2006-2007

  1. AAPS Orientation and Recruitment. This was an informational meeting to introduce the organization to new students. This activity was completed on September 19, 2006. Attendence was 30 people.
  2. AAPS Public Outreach. This will be an outreach event with a local elementary school involving hands-on scientific experiments with the children to stimulate their interest in science. Target date is February/March 2007.
  3. AAPS Invited Guest Speaker Seminar and Luncheon. The guest lecturer(s) (to be determined) will discuss different employment options within the pharmaceutical sciences as well as advancements within the pharmaceutical sciences fields. Target date is periodically throughout the year as speakers are available. The anticipated audience is 30 people.
  4. AAPS Student Mentor Luncheon. This will be an event for students in the PhD program mentoring students in the PharmD program to get together to discuss research interests and facilitate a closer bond between students in the PharmD program interested in research and students in the PhD program. Target date is November 2006. The participation is anticipated to be 20 people.
  5. AAPS Happy Hour. This will be an ned-of-year social event held at a local restaurant. This will allow chapter members to reconnect with one another and discuss individual research interests and career plans as well as future goals for the UCSF AAPS Student Chapter. Target date is June 2007. Anticipated participation is 50 people.
